Hornstra was 21 years old when she began filming the show, 5 years older than her character. She is a graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).
She left Heartbreak High in 1996 to star in the short-lived drama Sweat (1996, also starring Tai Nguyen).
She is one of many former Heartbreak High cast members to guest star on Wildside (1998), also created by Michael Jenkins and starring Tony Martin and Alex Dimitriades, and Head Start (2001), also created by Ben Gannon. She also appeared on McLeod's Daughters (2002, also starring Doris Younane and Abi Tucker).
