Malakai Mitchell is a Year 11 student at Hartley High. He enjoys playing basketball, dancing, and making new friends. Malakai is shown to have a warm sociable personality and a bit of a short temper. He is confirmed bisexual; being romantically interested in Amerie and previously having feelings for Rowan. He is friends with Quinni, Darren, Missy, and Jai. He is portrayed by Thomas Weatherall.

"Map B**Ch"[]
Malakai is first seen at Hartley High on his first day there, asking other students if they know where the office is. Missy points him out to Amerie and Sasha. Missy and Sasha both agree Malakai is attractive, Amerie and him then share an awkward glance together before parting ways. Later, Malakai is a part of the large group of students watching Amerie and Harper fight in the gym.

He is called over the intercom as one of the students that will be attending SLTs. When the class arrives he takes his seat next to Amerie, who calls him the c-word after catching her gaze. In reply he smiles and greets her back. Later he attempts to leave the class, stating it’s his first day and there must have been a scheduling mistake- but he is ignored by JoJo and Principal Woodsy. He is seen correcting Woodsy in SLTs while participating with the other students.
Malakai ends up being the first person to greet Amerie when she arrives at the graveyard party, jokingly calling her the c-word and formally introducing himself while handing her a beer. When Amerie starts to feel self-conscious about everyone looking at her, Malakai reassures her by drawing the attention to himself by dancing. Eventually Amerie joins in and they dance together with Quinni and Darren. Later that night, after Amerie leaves, he hops a fence with the others while running away from the cops crashing the party.

"Cash with Dusty, Spider, and Ant in the distance while Amerie talks to Quinni and Darren; Amerie questions how he is already so popular. He can be seen in SLTs watching the educational video and then later in the library when Quinni tries to ask out Sasha.
During basketball practice Amerie tries to ask Spider for a slap-band for the big party, but Spider won't give her one. This prompts Malakai to offer Amerie his own band. She doesn't believe him at first but he says she deserves to go if she really got SLTs cancelled and slaps it on her wrist.

When an annoyed Amerie can't make it into the big party, she meets Malakai on her way out who offers to help her get in another way. She questions why he is helping her as it is "social suicide". Malakai doesn't seem to care as he helps her over a large wall in-order to sneak in. Amerie ends up hurting her ankle and losing her balance, causing her to fall in the pool where Malakai rushes to get her out. Later in the night he can be seen following Amerie after her heated argument with Harper. The two talk on a curb and he comforts her about her rocky friendship with Harper - cracking jokes and making her smile with his charm. He ends up walking Amerie home and she says she is not going to kiss him, even though it seems clear they're attracted to each other. Then suddenly Amerie's mom interrupts their moment by yelling at her to get inside and they say their goodbye's.
"Eetsway"[]
Malakai is seen with Ant as they watch Amerie participate in the Haha Club’s group-laugh; the two question her sanity before walking away. Later, Malakai is called over by the basketball coach during practice who tells him he’s been selected for district tryouts and has a chance to make first grade. Coach then tells him he will have to train extra hard with Spider, because they’re the best on the team. Malakai initially seems reluctant - but Spider invites him to work out after practice and he agrees. The two are walking out of the gymnasium together when Malakai takes a moment to chat with Amerie, which visibly annoys Spider. The two joke a bit before Malakai attempts to ask Amerie out, but she completely avoids the question and abruptly leaves the conversation.

Later that day Malakai is sitting next to Ca$h in SLTs when he looks at Amerie, who reacts by slapping herself on the cheek awkwardly. He is paired with Spider, Dusty, Missy, Ant, and Amerie for a project in SLTs. During the project he is a part of the dick-joke conversation that causes Amerie to slap herself again, making everyone stare at her.
Malakai and Spider are getting extra basketball practice in the gym when Amerie starts having visions of the two boys kissing and grinding. The next day Malakai and Spider are working out when Spider insists the (Instagram) story Malakai posted of himself working out was a thirst trap for Amerie. Malakai doesn’t deny it and tells Spider not to be jealous. The two begin pumping their weights, openly competing with one another. Malakai then pushes himself too far and vomits on the floor of the gym, causing Ant to laugh at him. Spider gets in his face and calls him a lightweight, declaring that he won’t be training with Malakai from this point on. After Spider leaves, Ant asks Malakai if he is good and he is silent. Amerie can be seen admiring Malakai’s thirst trap story.
Later we see Malakai practicing on Hartley High’s outside basketball court as Amerie walks by. He asks her to play a 1 on 1 and she playfully agrees and the two have a good time on the court together. Malakai brings up beating Spider at the district trials and Amerie questions what they’re for. He explains it's to get into district basketball for university and then segue into asking Amerie if there is any specific reason Spider dislikes her so much. Amerie implies everyone dislikes her because of SLTs. This prompts Malakai to mention that he is only in SLTs because the receptionist mixed up his name with another black student, Malcom. The two agree this is a racist microaggression. Amerie asks why he’s still in SLTs and Malakai openly implies it's because he wanted the opportunity to get to know her. He then attempts to ask her to hang out again, but she politely skirts around the question before leaving him to practice for his trials. He is left with a big smile on his face as Amerie walks away.

That same night Amerie pops up at Malakai’s house after her heated convo with Harper and he invites her inside. The two hang in his bedroom where he begins to ramble nervously. Amerie interrupts him by saying his name a few times and then surprisingly asks him to help her take her clothes off. The two end up hooking up and the next day Malakai openly ditches his district basketball tryouts to hang with Amerie instead.
"Rack Off"[]
Malakai and Amerie are seen having fun, swimming together, and making out in the sunset. The two then take a walk where she thanks Malakai for being there for her. The two almost kiss again but Amerie reminds him her parents are probably watching from the house. They say their goodbye’s and Malakai puts his earbuds in and dances down the street, visibly in a great mood.
The next day at school he surprises Amerie in front of everyone by getting her flowers and a balloon that says “Will you be my girlfriend, Amer”, which embarrasses her. In the locker room later that day, the boys taunt him about asking Amerie out with flowers. Spider calls him a 'simp' and the two go back and forth; eventually Malakai accidentally lets it out that he and Amerie had sex. The boys make more jokes about him and Amerie hooking up, which visibly annoys Malakai. On his way out of the locker room the Coach calls him “Mr District No-Show” for skipping tryouts.

In SLTs Malakai is given a note by Amerie who’s in a good mood and takes the seat next to him. The note asks what he’s doing for Mardi Gras; the two joke together about their hook up before Amerie invites him to Darren’s for a pre-party which he accepts. Malakai and Ca$h can be seen not taking the cop’s lesson in SLTs seriously.
When the class re-joins, Spider calls out Malakai by making fun of him for 'pulling out', exposing that he and Amerie hooked up. She is disappointed with Malakai for telling people. He tries to apologize, but she ignores him to confront Harper instead. The confrontation makes Amerie tell all three of them (Malakai, Dusty, and Harper) to fuck off. Later Malakai tries to talk to her again but she’s still mad at him for telling people about their hook up. He says sorry but it’s too late and Amerie tells him to own his shit before she walks off.

On Mardi Gras, Darren is talking to Ca$h when they spot Malakai on the street. While Malakai makes his way inside he notices Ca$h’s black eye and asks him if he is okay. Inside Darren’s house Amerie grills an ashamed Malakai in front of Quinni, which creates an awkward vibe. Quinni then admits she was the one who gave Darren’s address to Malakai so he could come over and say sorry. Malakai begins to say a rehearsed apology that he wrote on his hand, the apology was originally written with Quinni’s help as we see her mouthing along as he reads it. Quinni gives him an enthusiastic thumbs up for the apology, and Amerie accepts it by stating he needs to change his awful outfit before they leave. Darren asks if Malakai wants something gay to wear, which Malakai happily says yes to. All five of them start to dress up, dance, and take shots to hype themselves up before the party. Malakai and Amerie share a genuine kiss while having fun, showing they’ve made up.
Later that night at the Mardi Gras Slay Ball the entire group of friends is waiting in line together. Malakai is holding hands with Amerie in line when Spider taunts him about his outfit. Malakai replies by saying Spider is feeling inadequate and not to be jealous of a black man. Malakai is seen in the crowd of the Slay Ball having a great time during the performances.
On the dance floor Missy and Malakai have a genuine moment where they call each other siblings (due to their shared indigenous background). Malakai is enthused by Missy’s First Nations necklace and she gifts it to him on-the-spot, stating it’s good to have another member of the First Nations community around. Malakai catches Amerie right after and expresses how much of a good timing he’s having, Amerie jokingly asks if his caps (MDMA) had kicked in. Malakai comments he’s not sure because he’s never done drugs before. He then looks around the club and realizes how high and drunk he actually is. Amerie, also high, wildly shakes him and the two continue to have a good time on the dancefloor with everyone else. Malakai is a part of the group that congratulates Darren for going on stage at the ball and is later seen dancing some more with Amerie.

At the end of the night everyone in the group is leaving, including Malakai. Amerie and him are walking down the street when he makes a joke about being boyfriend material, which prompts him to ask Amerie out again. Amerie holds off on answering him and begins to talk about Harper. Amerie comments that Malakai is noticeably drunk. As they walk and joke, a cop is aggressively ushering them to continue walking down the street. Amerie tries to get Malakai to walk faster but he insists on hearing what she had to say about their relationship, meanwhile the cop interrupts them rudely to yell at them. For no reason, the cop then begins to assault Malakai; pushing him in the back several times to force him down the street. When Malakai turns to face the cop in frustration, he tells him to 'fuck off'. The cop then lunges forward and grabs Malakai, lifting him up and slamming him to the ground with enough force to knock the wind out of him. In the process, the cop rips Missy’s necklace off Malakai’s neck and throws it on him while he is on the ground. The crowd rush to Malakai’s defense as he runs off with Ant.
When she Amerie lowkey blames Malakai for engaging with the cop when she tried not to, which understandably angers Malakai even more. Feeling bad for her comment, Amerie asks if anyone recorded the video so she could post it, stating the cops need to face repercussions. A distraught Malakai explicitly says he doesn’t want the video on the internet because he’s the only one that’s going to face scrutiny for it, and the cops won’t get in trouble. But Amerie, in the heat of the moment, accidentally posts the video online. This causes Malakai to completely lose his temper and yell at her in front of everyone. He states he wants to be alone and for her to get out of his life, before running away. Amerie doesn’t follow him, taking his words at face value.

As Malakai runs away he stops on the sidewalk to sob about the traumatic event he just experienced. Harper and Dusty follow after him and comfort him under a street light, they then help carry him back home. The three of them are next seen smoking weed in Dusty’s room, where Malakai can be seen emotionally drained and vulnerable from the night's incident. As the three smoke, they begin to make out with each other, this leads to an eventual threesome where Malakai spends the night.
"Bin Chicken"[]
Malakai wakes up with Harper and Dusty the next morning. Harper smiles at him while he walks out of the room looking ashamed. We see that Amerie has been texting Malakai all weekend but he only just responded to her Monday morning, saying they will chat at school.
Over the weekend the video of Malakai getting assaulted by the cop goes viral and as he walks the halls, students mock him. Harper tries to comfort him about the whole situation but he says he doesn’t remember much because he was super drunk and that he’d rather just forget everything. The two agree to never let Amerie find out that they hooked up. Right after his conversation with Harper, Malakai sees Amerie in the hall who is visibly concerned about him. He lies to her and says his phone was broken and he just needed some time. He then asks her out and the two make plans to hang later that night. Amerie leans in for a kiss but he actively avoids it and says they’re late for the assembly, where she stares at him.

During basketball practice Malakai can’t focus because his mind is stuck on the threesome. Principal Woodsy takes Malakai aside to talk to him about the viral police video he was involved in and she reassures him that she is there if he needs any help. He brushes Woodsy off politely and enters the locker room where he begins to look at the guys in a different way - admiring their muscles and becoming flustered. He fantasizes a naked Dusty turning around and looking at him in the showers, but it ends up being his own imagination and he snaps out of it when he notices Spider is grilling him.
Later that night Malakai and Amerie are discussing their tattoo choices while on a date at the arcade. The two laugh together and are seemingly having a good time. While they play Dance Dance Galactic, Amerie notices that Malakai is really good at dancing. Malakai insists he’s better at basketball than dancing and would rather pursue that than dance. Amerie switches topics and brings up the cop incident again - Malakai gets visibly bummed, asking if she could just drop it. Amerie agrees to drop it and the two share a deep kiss before continuing to play arcade games, but Malakai is visibly feeling guilty for his secret hook up.
The next day Amerie and Malakai are seen canoodling in SLTs when Missy reads an anonymous note during an activity that says Harper likes to have threesomes with Dusty and Malakai. This pisses Missy off, who blames Spider. Amerie then begins asking Malakai if it’s true and he can not lie to her- so he stays silent. Amerie immediately turns and calls Harper a slut. This makes Spider laugh, causing Malakai to jump from his seat to hit Spider but Dusty interferes before anything physical can happen. Malakai is later outside of JoJo’s office and is assigned detention with the rest of the students involved. Dusty asks Malakai if he’s good, and Malakai assures him that he is. Malakai, Harper, and Dusty’s names can be seen connected in the new sex-map written underneath the desks in SLTs.

Later that day Malakai is at the park with Amerie when he regretfully admits he had a hard night and isn’t proud of what he did. She asks why Harper, and he says he wasn’t thinking straight. Malakai then officially breaks up with Amerie due to his own mental health struggles. He expressed to Amerie that he doesn’t know who he is right now and that he’s sorry. She says she’ll be there for him if he needs her and that she’s a friend who cares about Malakai.
That week everyone is at the basketball game when Darren comments that Malakai looks how they feel (which is sad and depressed). Malakai can be seen making baskets and playing really well during the game until he thinks about the assault and begins to psych himself out. In the locker room the coach tries to help get Malakai’s head in the game but he is highly irritable and snaps at Spider for making snide comments on the side. The two start a physical squabble and Malakai says ‘fuck all of you’ to the team before walking out of the gym in the middle of half-time.
"Angeline"[]
Before school starts, Malakai walks into the locker room and throws his basketball uniform in the trash. Amerie sees him in the halls and they share a look before Amerie is dragged away by Darren and Quinni. During SLTs, Missy asks Malakai if he’s okay; he says he is and that he’s just tired from staying up watching Antique Roadshow. He participates in the stuck-in-the-mud game with the other students and after is seen sitting with Ant, Spider, and Dusty. Malakai disagrees with something Spider says and when Dusty defends Spider, Malakai calls them both out and then walks away to sit with Harper. When Harper asks what he’s doing Malakai says he’s done with Dusty’s shit. Malakai then asks Harper if she’s okay and she says she is, with a smile. In the halls later, Malakai asks Amerie if he can come to her party later. She questions his motives but he says he just wants to hang with his friends again. They have a friendly chat and Amerie formally invites him to her party.

Malakai shows up to Amerie’s with Twister, not expecting the party to be such a banger. He has a quick confrontation with Dusty in the kitchen where Dusty taunts Malakai about losing Amerie. This annoys Malakai and he accepts a beer from another party goer and begins to chug it. Later he’s seen witnessing Dusty and Amerie getting close; and as he’s about to leave the party, Missy shows up with Jai and another friend. Jai introduces himself to Malakai, who compliments Jai’s necklace. Jai promises to make a brand new necklace for Malakai and the two guys follow Missy into the party.
When Harper gets to the party she quickly finds Malakai, who is very drunk. She asks him where Amerie is and he says she is probably making out with Dusty. Harper says her and Malakai need to have a chat later (about contracting chlamydia) but he’s too inebriated to take her seriously. He then chugs the rest of his drink, throws his cup on the ground, and then does a backflip in front of everyone.

Later in the night, Malakai is so drunk that he somehow made his way to the roof of Amerie’s house. Below, a crowd of party goers chant at him to jump, while Missy begs for him to get down. Ant suggests he jump on the trampoline nearby as another partier asks Malakai to make the noise again (from Malakai’s viral video). He makes the sound and the crowd all laugh at him. Amerie snaps and yells at him, but Malakai is too drunk and asks why she invited him to the party if she was just going to ignore him. The crowd ooo’s and begins egging Malakai to jump again. As he walks closer to the edge, Missy begins calling for her brother Jai, who quickly comes up behind Malakai and drags him backward. Jai holds a drunk Malakai on the ground as he begins to sob uncontrollably. Missy and Jai can be seen dragging a depressed Malakai out of the party. As he gets into the back of Jai’s car he ignores Amerie’s text. At the end of the episode Malakai is seen being handed medication by Harper to treat the chlamydia he contracted during their threesome.
"The Sheriff"[]
Malakai is seen taking the day off from school to head on country (in the bush) with Jai in order to improve his mental health and regain his sense-of-self. In SLTs, Missy tells Woodsy and the rest of the class he’s on country and won’t be in class.

Later that night he can be seen wearing his brand new necklace while camping around the fire with Jai. The two are silent but Malakai looks a bit antsy. While Dusty and Amerie cuddle during the overnight protest, we see Malakai silent by the campfire again. This time he’s seen holding and cherishing the dinosaur keychain he got at the arcade with Amerie, implying he still has strong feelings for her.
"Three of Swords"[]
The next day Malakai is chatting with Quinni and Darren when Harper and Amerie walk up together holding hands. He says he missed a lot while he was away (referring to Harper and Amerie getting back together and the protest) and kind of wishes he was there. Malakai is in SLTs when Woodsy reintroduces JoJo as the teacher.

Malakai is seen attending SLTs when Ca$h interrupts the class to confess his love for Darren. After SLTs he is seen with Darren, Quinni, Harper, and Amerie discussing the arrest of Chook; they all list off terrible things they wish would happen to him. Darren then proposes they cleanse themselves by stripping to their underwear and jumping into the ocean. Malakai makes a 'too-soon' threesome joke about the proposal, which the girls awkwardly laugh at. The group then all line up holding hands and jump into the ocean, enjoying each others company as they swim together in setting sun. That night, Amerie and Malakai are seen washing off alone outside when she thanks him for letting her borrow his socks again (she forgot hers on the beach). The two say their goodbye's for the night and Malakai watches Amerie walk off - he begins to smile, grateful to still have her in his life.
